Named in honor of  Brigadier General William Lendrum ["Billy"] Mitchell.  Enlisted in Army as private in 1898 and served in Philippines during Spanish-American War.  Led the precarious construction of a telegraph network in Alaska and then pioneered the U. S. Army aviation. Rose to the rank of BG in command of the Air Service with AEF in WW I.

Sold 1987 for $1,270,000.00 and scrapped 1988.
