Named in honor of Adm Henry Thomas Mayo, USNA Class 1876, C-in-C Atlantic Fleet, WW I.

Decommissioned May 1946 and returned to the Maritime Commission. Then transferred to the Army Sea Transportation Service and renamed in late 1940's as General Nelson M Walker.  Reacquired by the Navy in 1950 for MSTS.

Made trips to Yokohama as early as Oct 1945.

Believed to be in storage at James River Reserve Fleet, Fort Eustis, VA.
